Free CE Course for Oral Health Providers

This free CE course will focus on HPV infection, precancers, cancer, vaccination and early detection in the morning and will cover drug diversion in the afternoon.

8:30am – 10:30am   Presentation: Reflections on HPV infection, Cancer, Precancer, Life, Love, and New Technologies for Early Detection
Speakers: J. E. Bouquot and Hiba Qari
Objectives: At the end of this presentation the participant will be able to:

  1. Describe clinical and microscope features of all types of HPV oral lesions, especially those associated with cancer development;
  2. Describe technologies and methods used for early diagnosis and prediction of cancer transformation;
  3. Describe treatment and prognosis of all types of HPV-associated H&N lesions; and
  4. Compare look-alike lesions, especially for HPV precancers and early cancers.

10:30am – 11:00am   Presentation: You are the Key to HPV Cancer Prevention
Speaker: Angela Barker
Objectives: At the end of this presentation the participant will be able to:

  1. Define the importance of HPV vaccination for cancer prevention;
  2. Explain the rationale for vaccinating youth at ages 11 or 12; and
  3. List the recommendations for HPV vaccination of girls and boys.

Speakers: Chessie Short and Nickole Taylor
Objectives: At the end of this presentation the participant will be able to:

  1. State current statistics on West Virginia (WV) prescription drug overdose deaths and compare them to the national average;
  2. Describe the epidemiology of pain and misuse of opioids;
  3. Locate opioid treatment and dosage guidelines, and identify drug interactions;
  4. Describe drug seeking behavior in patients;
  5. Identify best practices for working with patients suspected of drug seeking behavior;
  6. State the current controlled substance laws; and
  7. Describe the WV PDMP, the log in process, and how to do a patient look-up.

* In accordance with the WV Board of Dentistry’s Continuing Education Requirements, “licensed dentists shall complete at least 3 hours of continuing education regarding drug diversion training and best practice prescribing of controlled substances training and training on prescribing and administration of an opioid antagonist and shall be reported beginning with the February 1, 2018 reporting deadline. These requirements may be waived for a licensed dentist who has not prescribed, administered, or dispensed a controlled substance during the reporting period.”

About the Speakers

Dr. Bouquot was trained at the University of Minnesota, Mayo Clinic and the Royal College of Dentistry, Copenhagen, Denmark. For 27 years he chaired diagnostic science departments in two dental schools: West Virginia University and the University of Texas in Houston. He is co-author of the most popular textbook of oral pathology and has been President of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology, a Senior Visiting Scientist of the Mayo Clinic, President of two national oral pathology organizations and Director of the American Cancer Society’s national Board of Directors. He has won more than 60 teaching, service and research awards, including the St. George Medal, the highest award given by the American Cancer Society, the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Minnesota, the Lifetime Achievement Award from WVU, the Distinguished Dentist Award from the West Virginia Dental Association, and Honorary Diplomate status from the American Board of Oral Medicine. He has published more than 340 papers, abstracts and book chapters. Dr. Bouquot’s precancer, oral disease epidemiology and bone research has been cited thousands of times in the literature. He has received a NIH grant to study HPV and has given more than 1,500 research and continuing education presentations in every US state and in more than 30 countries. In his seminars he emphasizes clinical features of disease, differential diagnosis and disease management, with much practical information based on his lifetime experience in an active clinical oral pathology (oral medicine) practice and one of the nation’s largest oral pathology biopsy services.
Hiba Qari,BDS,MSc, Diplomate ABOMP
Assistant Professor & Director, Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology, Department of Diagnostic Sciences, West Virginia University School of Dentistry, Morgantown, WV
Dr. Qari was born in Pittsburgh, PA (Go Steelers) to Middle Eastern parents and feels right at home in Morgantown, WV. She is a globe-trotter, having lived in England, Saudi Arabia and the United States; she is fluent in both Arabic and English. She received her Bachelor of Dental Surgery from King Abdul-Aziz University, in Saudi Arabia. Upon completion, she worked in Saudi Arabia as a general practitioner for half a decade, after which she returned to the US, where she received a Master of Science degree from Tufts University, with a research foci on flow cytometry and construction of 3-dimensional human skin equivalent models induced from pluripotent stem cells. Dr. Qari completed a residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at Baylor College of Dentistry, Texas A&M University, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology as well as a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. She has published several research papers in odontogenic tumors, osteomyelitis, lichen planus and soft tissue tumors. She is currently Assistant Professor at the WVU School of Dentistry, where she directs the biopsy service, Maxillofacial Diagnostics, and is Director of the Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology. She is proud to be a mountaineer and part of the WVU community.

Angela Barker, PA-C
Chief Medical Officer, New River Health Association, Inc.
Angela Barker is a native West Virginian from beautiful Summersville, in Nicholas County. She graduated from West Virginia University School of Dentistry in May 1999 with a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene. She then decided to continue her education and graduated from Mountain State University in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science in Physician Assistant. She began her career as a physician assistant in 2002 in Beckley. She then received a Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies in 2004 from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She has worked at New River Health Association, a federally qualified health center in Fayette County since June 2005.  She has worked primarily in the school based health setting in Richwood, prior to the 2016 flood that condemned the school building. She was instrumental in the starting and running of the dental operations at New River in 2010.  She became Chief Medical Officer at New River in 2014. Since becoming CMO she was awarded a grant from the American Cancer Society to increase HPV rates among young teens, as well as one form the CDC administered by WVU to increase colon cancer screenings, and several other smaller ones.
Chessie A. Short, MS
Program Specialist, WV Violence & Injury Prevention Program
Chessie Short is a Program Specialist with the West Virginia Violence and Injury Prevention Program in the Bureau of Public Health. She received both her Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and Master of Science in Health Informatics from Marshall University. She has over 10 years of experience working in the mental health field, which included working with adolescents and adults with a substance use disorder. Her current role is providing academic detailing education to prescribers, dispensers, nurses, and other health care professionals regarding the Center for Disease Control (CDC) opioid prescribing guidelines and West Virginia Safe & Effective Management of Pain Guidelines (SEMP).
Nickole Taylor, MBA
Program Specialist, WV Violence & Injury Prevention Program
Nickole Taylor is a Violence and Injury Prevention Specialist for the Bureau for Public Health/Office of Maternal Child and Family Health. Nickole holds a BA degree in Communications with a focus in advertising and public relations from West Virginia State University, and an MBA from Salem University. She completed an internship with The Arc of the Three Rivers where she revamped their mission and vision statement and did public broadcasting and fundraising for the organization. She has 4 years of experience in the medical field and 7 years of sales and leadership experience. Her current role is providing academic detailing education to prescribers, dispensers, nurses, and other health care professionals regarding the Center for Disease Control (CDC) opioid prescribing guidelines and West Virginia Safe & Effective Management of Pain Guidelines (SEMP).
